Since her afternoon schedule had been screwed up by the PPD’s Organized Crime Unit, after reassembling her office, Lucia decided it was as good a time as any to go out in search of Bac’s old friend, Nick “Chief” Lynch. Baccaro had met Nick while he was still Chief of Police in Chester and had called him that even after Nick left the force, and that’s how Lucia thought of him, too. Besides a love for sports cars, Chief also shared Bac’s love for booze so Lucia started the search in one of the many dive bars she knew Chief and Bac had frequented. She finally found him in the third one, sitting at the bar watching the highlights of last night’s Phillies win over the Rockies on a grainy black-and-white TV.

She slid onto the cracked vinyl stool next to him. “Hey, Chief, how’s life treating you these days?”

“Lucy! Where the hell you been keeping yourself?”

“Been keeping myself busy.”

“You still running Fidelia?”

“Oh yeah. Got it turning a steady profit these days.”

“Damn. How the hell’d you do that?” Chief downed the last of his whiskey, shaking his head. “Bac must be turning over in his grave.”

Snorting with mild amusement, Lucia admitted, “He would be wondering where all of his training went wrong.” She got herself a beer and Chief a refill and then regaled him with the latest on Fidelia’s rising prospects.

“Bac was right about you. He said you’d be a better PI than him someday and look at you now.”

“I’m not a better PI, I’m a better businessman, um, woman, whatever.”

“You still miss him—don’t you?”

Lucia squinted across the room, seeing the bar had started to fill up with the after-work crowd. “How can I—when he lives in my head?”

“Too bad that’s the only place he lives.”

Chief finished his drink in a gulp, still she assumed, trying to drown his guilt after all these years. Lucia signaled the bartender to bring him another. “It wasn’t your fault, Chief. Not your fault he died, and not your fault you lived.”

Looking entirely unconvinced, Chief nodded glumly. “Since you are such a sharp hand at business, I don’t think you hunted me down to waste an afternoon offering your grief counseling services.” He swiveled to face her. “What is it you’re looking for today?”

“Information.”

“I see.” Chief glanced around, before jerking his head towards the dingy booths in the back. “Should we go somewhere more private?”

“Probably for the best.” They decamped to the back booth; once seated she asked, “When you were still in blue, did you ever run into a Philly cop named John Colona?”

“Ain’t he the guy that busted your dad?” She nodded and Chief said, “Oh shit. I heard about what happened to your old man. Sorry for…for your loss.” Lucia mechanically thanked him. “Is that what this is about?”

“Sort of. Colona’s running the investigation but he ain’t running it too hard. He’s more focused on finding buried treasure than a murderer.”

“Buried treasure?”

“It’s another long story. The question I have for you is, did you ever hear that Colona’s dirty?”

“Sure did.
